SHILLONG: Bollywood actor and Congress MP from Firozabad, Raj Babbar on Monday asserted that his party will fulfil all the promises made in its manifesto.

Babbar was in the city to address a rally at Bishnupur to garner support for Congress candaidate from 19-South Shillong Manas Chaudhuri.

While urging the public to vote for the Congress, Babbar praised Chaudhuri for his performance in the previous constituency.

“We need an MLA who will work for the people and not for himself,” he said adding that common people in the country have ‘finger power’ which can decide the fate of the State.

Stating that only youth can bring development, the veteran actor-turned-politician also urged the youngsters to concentrate on self employment.

Babbar, however, reiterated that providing job to the youth is the prime concern of party vice president Rahul Gandhi and the promises made in the Congress manifesto have been approved by party chief Sonia Gandhi.

Meanwhile, addressing the gathering, Chaudhuri said that the power bestowed upon him by the Congress will be used for the welfare of the public.

“People have right to know where their MLA spends the money,” he said while stating that poverty will not be eliminated by distributing chairs to the people.

Commenting on the scarcity of LPG cylinders, Chaudhuri said that a new distribution system will be worked out in the city to ensure that people get their share on time even as he said that the Congress will raise the cap on cylinders to 11 from the existing nine.

He also asked the people not be scared from any one while casting their vote on February 23.

Earlier in the day, Babbar addressed a rally in Khliehriat where he appealed to the voters to elect Congress leaders to the Assembly for ensuring more development and improved security scenario in the State.

“The state needs the leadership of a party like the Congress which is also in power at the Centre.

This will make the State’s elected leaders to gain easy access to the Centre and help them garner benefits for the people here,” he said.

Promising more employment for the youths in the coming years, Babbar said, “If a youth is unemployed, it is not an embarrassment for him but a scar on the nation.” Around 5,000 people, mostly from Khliehriat Assembly constituency attended the rally held at Khliehriat Stadium. Even though Amos Dkhar is the Congress candidate from Khliehriat, Babbar in his speech did not mention the name of any particular candidate while appealing the public to vote for the party.
