SHILLONG: With the major Opposition party UDP not fielding any candidate to contest the post of the Assembly Speaker, the stage is set for Congress legislator AT Mondal to become the next Speaker.

The election of the Speaker will be held on March 11 at the Assembly at Rilbong.

According to sources, Mondal is the choice of Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma for the post of the Speaker. Efforts are now on within the Congress to come to a consensus on the candidature for the Speaker’s post.

With the presence of more legislators from Garo Hills, the Chief Minister is finding it difficult to accommodate Mondal in the cabinet.

Mondal held key portfolios like Transport and Power in the Cabinet since 2008 when Congress was in power.

When contacted, Mondal said he will abide by the party’s decision.
