International Womens’ Day observed in Assam

Guwahati: Assam on Friday observed International Womens’ Day with several programmes organised to demand improvement in the lives of women and ensuring that they are given their rightful place in society.

Social Welfare Minister Akon Bora said that it was the duty of every individual to ensure that women are given their due rights and are treated with equality, respect and dignity in society.

”It is not only on a particular day that we should talk about women and their rights but should work continuously to ensure that they are not deprived of oppurtunities or are discriminated in any sphere”, Bora said at a funtion organised to observe the day here.

In another function, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Bhubaneswar Kalita said that ensuring economic empowerment and security to the lives of women that needs to be focussed on. Kalita, along with several other organisations, felicitated all-India topper in the Chartered Accountancy (CA) examination Prema Jayakumar, daughter of an autorickshaw driver from Malad in Mumbai at the function organised by a socio-cultural organisation Byatikram Masdo to observe International Women’s Day.

Several other programmes was also organised by different government organisations, NGOs and institutions to observe the day. (PTI)
