At a time when Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is all set to complete one year in the office, the state is witnessing collapse of administration which resulted in sharp deterioration in the law and order situation. Trouble is brewing from the main rival party, the BSP, whose leader former Chief Minister Mayawati is seeking the imposition of president’s rule in UP. What could be worse, commentary on state of affairs indicates that the state police is on the run and anti-social elements and criminals are ruling the roosts.
The manner in which the young Deputy SP Zia-ul-Haq was killed in the Kunda tehsil in Pratapgarh recently is said to be symptomatic of the deplorable nexus of criminals and politicians that is infesting the state. In a shocking record for the state police, when the young circle officer of Kunda Zia-ul-Haq was killed, the entire police force that had accompanied him to deal with the goons in the village ran away leaving him completely alone. Another related and equally disturbing incident took place on past Saturday in Balipur, which was the killing of gram pradhan Nanhelal Yadav and his brother Suresh Yadav, with the alleged involvement of local MLA and powerful minister Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiyya, who was subsequently removed from his post. The young DSP Zia-ul-haq had visited the village Balipur to investigate the matter of killing of Nanhelal Yadav, but in the process he lost his own life in the large scale violence that has engulfed the state. Raja Bhaiyya has been named in the FIR along with his close associates for their involvement in the killing of DSP and others. Then entire opposition has joined hands with Parveen Azad, the widow of young DSP, in seeking the arrest of Raja Bhaiyya. Parveen Azan has alleged that her husband was victim of a huge conspiracy to hush up the murders. The opposition not only met the Governor BL Joshi and submitted to him a memorandum about deterioration of law and order, but also disrupted the proceeding in UP Assembly and UP Legislative Council.
Efforts from Akhilesh Yadav are falling through two stools as the situation is spiralling out of control with violence taking place in one or the other district very frequently. Despite open warnings from both Mulayam and Akhilesh Yadav, it is increasingly becoming very difficult to control Samajwadi Party leaders and workers, who are creating more problems for their supreme leadership, which got unprecedented mandate from public to rule the state. Alarming situation for the state and the government has arisen now when there have been 12 major incidents of communal violence in the state during the last one year. Especially cities like Faizabad, which had not witnessed violence even during the demolition of Babri mosque, too were affected during the communal violence that shook the state few months back. Akhilesh Yadav is facing a tough time in dealing with law and order situation, at a time when Lok Sabha polls are not very far away.
