SHILLONG: Sushabhan Choudhury, Dean and Professor at Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering of North Eastern Hill University is facing allegations of producing a fake PhD certificate to secure jobs with Sikkim Manipal University and the NEHU.

The Jadavpur University Students Union (JUSU) has alleged that Choudhury failed to acquire a PhD degree from Jadavpur University in 2006 and his PhD thesis was cancelled.

In a statement sent to media houses, the Union asserted that he had manipulated the PhD certificate, an issue that was raised by the members in 2006.

According to the Union members, although inquiries came from Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) and North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), it is questionable as to why administrators of SMU and NEHU did not verify the authenticity of his certificate from Jadavpur University.

According to Dr Sudip Chatterjee, Ex General Secretary (FET) of JUSU, “CBI Shillong has already started the investigation and it has been emphasized that the Executive Council of Jadavpur University should file an official complaint to Jadavpur Police Station and an FIR be intimated to CBI urgently.”

As per allegations, Choudhury manipulated his PhD on the letterhead of Dr B Karmakar, Principal Secretary, Jadavpur University. Reportedly, he has been using this fake PhD certificate since 2006.

Chatterjee said that till March 2010, Choudhury was a professor at Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT) under Sikkim Manipal University.

He further alleged that during 2010, one PhD was awarded from SMU under Sushabhan Choudhury’s supervision. “It is questionable as to how a PhD degree can be awarded from SMU under a fake PhD degree holder of Jadavpur University,” he said.

On the other hand, Choudhury has clarified that he been receiving the utterly false and defamatory mails from unidentified persons since 2011 and accordingly he has filed four FIRs in connection to these mails.

According to him, the investigating officer tracked the mails and found that these were sent from different locations including abroad.

It will be pertinent to mention here that, the email id as claimed was verified by the undersigned with JUSU and they categorically said that they do not have any such email ID and as such the above mentioned mailer was using a fake ID.

He also said that this was a malicious campaign which is affecting him and his family adversely besides defaming the esteemed Universities of the status of NEHU and SMU and Jadavpur University.
