SHILLONG: Former Rajya Sabha MP Robert Kharshiing has slammed the Chief Minister and the Home Minister for failing to tackle the growing number of rape cases in the State.

The statement from the former MP comes in the backdrop of the rape of a 5-year-old child in South Garo Hills and the recovery of the body of a girl in Ri-Bhoi who had been sexually assaulted before being murdered.

In a statement issued here on Sunday, Kharshiing claimed that neither the Chief Minister nor the Home Minister replied to his phone calls. “Only DGP Prem Singh and Addl. DGP SK Jain had the courtesy and politeness to promptly receive my calls,” the former MP said.

Severely condemning the two rape cases, Kharshiing said, “How many more rapes and deaths have to occur before the Chief Minister and the Home Minister wake up and get serious about tackling the horrendous rapes occurring in the State.”

Kharshiing also called for the ouster of both the Chief Minister and the Home Minister for their failure to tackle crimes against women in the State.
