SHILLONG: The check on overloading by the custom officials has led to a total shut down on the export of coal, limestone and other mineral resources to Bangladesh through the Land Custom Station (LCS) in Dawki on Monday.

According to the exporters, around 500 trucks lie stranded due to non issuance of car permit by the Custom officials for the export of the mineral resources to Bangladesh.

When contacted, few of the exporters said that the checking has come as a surprise since nothing of this kind was carried out since many years now.

‘It is impossible to check overloading since there is no equipment to measure the quantity of coal and limestone being carried by the trucks,” the exporters said while adding that the Custom officials informed that they were simply following ‘the directive from the top’.

Informing that only on Saturday, trucks were allowed to pass over without any checking for overloading, the exporters said that they suspect foul play on the part of the Custom officials in the latest exercise.

The exporters would meet at Dawki on Tuesday to decide on the future course of action on the matter.
