SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal will convene a meeting with the defence authorities and Urban Affairs on April 4 to chalk out measures for the construction of the much delayed fly over in the city.

Goyal informed that the meeting has been called to discuss the land swapping issue for the construction of the proposed flyover from Rap’s Mansion to Sweeper Lane, Mawlonghat.

The proposed construction has been delayed since long due to unavailability of defence land. However, with the defence authorities ready to part with the land for the flyover now, the project might as well see the light of the day.

It is learnt that the State Government is yet to identify an alternate land for handing over to the defence authorities in exchange of the Cantonment land on which the proposed fly over would be constructed.

The State Government had earlier set up a Joint Inspection Committee which was assigned the task of locating suitable land either in East Khasi Hills or Ri Bhoi districts for handing over to the defence authorities.

The idea for the flyover was mooted considering the growing traffic congestion in the city and the State Government had even started the land acquisition process with a sanction of Rs 3.43 crore as compensation for the land to be acquired for the project.
