Guwahati: Aimed at strengthening the healthcare services delivery in the North East region, the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) today rolled out a programme for reducing maternal mortality rate (MMR). FOGSI president Dr Hema Divakar told reporters here that training of young gynaecologists, front line health workers, staff nurses and medical officers and revival of the mid-wifery system for effective healthcare services delivery for pregnant women were the focus areas.
The programme YUVA-Towards Tomorrow (YTT) would provide superior technical training to young gynaecologists from all the seven N-E states on various aspects of women’s health, Divakar said.
As a first step in this direction, she said FOGSI has organised a three-day conclave in Guwahati from today to train and technologically update young gynaecologists on ultrasonography, laparoscopic surgery, infertility, preventive oncology and other important aspects of Obstetrics and gynaecology (ObGyn).
She said, “There are 27 million deliveries in the country every year but there are 212 MMR per lakh deliveries on an average.
In the N-E the MMR rate is 291 with the situation being worst in Silchar of Assam at 1200.
“In the West the MMR is 10 per lakh. Our target is to reach that target by saving as many mothers as possible. Creation of awareness is the only way to achieve this.”
As there was a shortage of gynaecologists with 30,000 such doctors in the country, Divakar said only 500 young gynaecologists are added to the talent pool each year. (PTI)
