SHILLONG: The Inspector General of BSF, Meghalaya Frontier, Sudesh Kumar sought the cooperation of the border residents in tackling the activities of militants including GNLA and and ANVC (B) and also smugglers.
After launching the civic action programme of the BSF on Wednesday in the border area of Gumaghat, in South West Khasi Hills, Kumar said that smugglers from across the border bring in fake Indian currency notes which destabilize the economy and ultimately impact adversely the people. He also said that the GNLA and the ANVC (B) cadres are operating in the border area and their extortion activities can be checked with the cooperation of the border residents.
He wanted the border population to share information about any stranger or unknown person visiting their villages and also about the movement of smugglers and militants.
Around 400 people from the border villages were present during the civic action programme of the BSF. This is for the second consecutive year that that the power tillers and other items worth Rs 5 lakh were distributed to the border villagers under the leadership of Kumar .Besides power tillers, stationery items to the schools in the border areas were also distributed.
Instilling confidence among the elders of the village, the BSF IG said that BSF men are deployed on border for well being of people and to promote safe, secure and prosperous border. He also said that the villagers having land ahead of border fencing should cultivate their land and assured that BSF will give security cover to the farmers and moreover, the gate timings will be adjusted as per the convenience of the farmers going ahead of the fence for cultivation .
