SHILLONG: The Director of Sericulture and Weaving, Bakul Ch Hajong has said that the recent appointment of nine sericulture demon-strators was based on the merit list of the 2006-2007.

The A·chik Student Welfare Association had termed the appointment as a violation of the 40% job reservation policy for Garos.

The Director said the reservation policy of the Government is applied during selection for under-taking the training course and after successful completion, the selected candidates are generally employed in the department on merit basis as per the availability of vacant posts occurred due to promotion and retirement from existing staff under the directorate, without observing the reservation policy as far as the candidates are concerned.

The director said that out of the total nine appointed candidates, four are from Khasi-Jaintia, two from Muslim community, one each from Boro and Barman communities and one Garo.

However, out of the total 18 passed out candidates of 2006-2007 batch, three candidates are from Garo community who were placed in the merit list at serial number 5, 15 and 18 and the appointment was given from serial 2 to 10.

“Hence, as of now only one Garo candidate has been covered and appointed”, the director said.
