NONGSTOIN: The Shallang Athiabari and Rwiang Truck Drivers and Handymen Association called off their strike on April 28.

Since the last four days, the Association had refused to ply owing to the high- handedness of the toll gate and weigh bridge officials. They had alleged that, they were being constantly over- charged at these gates and bridges. They had placed a demand that all weigh bridges and toll gates should display the appropriate rates at the gates and bridges.

West Khasi Hills District administration led by J P Lakiang ADC cum DC In- Charge met the members of the Association on Saturday at the SDO’s residence at Sonapahar, Mawshynrut. Also present at the meeting were Assistant Superintendent of Police G D Kharwanlang and MDC Mawghynrut F K Ryntathiang. After threadbare discussion, the ADC said he would ask the weigh bridges to display the rates at the bridges. He said he had no authority over toll gates as they were under the Syiemship and District Council.

S Hoojon, General Secy of the Association declared “We are providing the toll- gates along the Shallang- Riangdo- Athiabari road, a week’s deadline to display the rates at the gates. If they fail to do so, we will begin another strike.”
