SHILLONG: In the wake of arrest of two senior Maoist leaders in Assam, the State Police has also decided to grill the duo to find out details of attempt by the ‘red army’ to make forays into Meghalaya.
Sources on Monday said that the two senior Maoist leaders are being interrogated by Assam police and Central agencies and later the State Police will seek details about Maoist plans in Meghalaya.
“We will go there and see if they have any plans in our State,” sources added.
The Meghalaya police will find out whether the Maoists have any links with the outlawed HNLC or the GNLA or any other organization in the State.
It may be mentioned that the two Maoists – Aklanta Rabha alias Maheshji and Siraj Rabha – were arrested from near Assam -Meghalaya boundary on Friday last.
Sources also said that the Maoists would be eyeing the entire North East region as their strategy is to gain control over new areas and recruit new cadres.
The Maoists leaders were arrested while they were on their way to meet some Khasi youths near the Assam-Meghalaya border, the source said, adding, “It is certain that the red rebels were trying to spread their ideology among the Khasi people in Meghalaya.”
The Maoists have set up a cadre base of sort in many districts of Assam including Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Kamrup, Goalpara, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, etc. and are now trying to spread their tentacles in the neighbouring states of Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya in their attempt to establish a ‘people’s army’ in the long run.
