Women sensitization programme held

 SHILLONG: A Sensitization and Interactive Session Programme was conducted by the Meghalaya State Commission for Women and the District Administration East Garo Hills District recently at Williamnagar.

The programme was attended by Social Welfare Minister Deborah C Marak besides senior government Officials, Head of Institutions and NGOs.

Delivering her address, Marak expressed her concern about the rising trend of crimes against women and children and appealed to the people to be alert and such incidence should bring to the notice of the District Administration and the Police.

Stressing on cooperation, Marak said “There is a need to work together. The Government, the NGOs and the Public at large should work hand in hand to tackle any such incidents.”

She further said that there is a need to strengthen the District level committee on crimes against women and also to form Block level committee and committee at every locality.

A similar programme on Crimes and Violence Against women and children organized by the Meghalaya State Commission for Women in collaboration with Amatsara and sponsored by National Commission for Women was held at Khliehriat East Jaintia Hills District recently.

The programme was attended by the district Deputy Commissioner Abhishekh Bhagotia, ADM S Laloo, lawyers, members of the Seng Kynthei, Rangbah Shnong and others.

Various topics on concept on violence against women and children, Legislation for protection of women and children and Legal Aids and Schemes and programme for women and children in difficult circumstances were discussed.

In his speech, the DC expressed his appreciation to the Commission and look forwards to having such more programme in the District.

The Chairperson of the Commission, Theilin Phanbuh stressed on the need of the parents to be responsible for their children so as to ensure their safety when they went out of their homes.

“The society also should be alert when any crimes and violence are committed to women and children they should immediately inform and bring to the notice of the concern authorities that is the District Administration and the Police”, she added.
