SHILLONG: The importance of the Sixth Economic Census was highlighted during a training programme for the State Level on Sixth Economic Census, broadening the perspective on the need to have a compact data collected through the census for effective planning process in policy matter of the country and the state.
Organised by the Directorate of Economics & Statistics in collaboration with the Central Statistics Office at Arts and Culture Hall here on Tuesday, the training programme stressed on the importance of the data collected through the economic census stating that it will be of immense use for improving the database of the state economy and also the country as a whole for micro level planning and policy formulation with respect to various economic activities.
The 6th Economic Census will be a joint effort of Central Statistics Office and Directorate of Economics & Statistics in the States and the field work is to be undertaken with the help of officials (enumerators/supervisors) appointed by the Directorate who will visit each and every household, shop, factory and business establishment to collect information.
The Economic Census is conducted every five years.
Imparting the training, Deputy Director General, Central Statistic Office-wing Kolkata, BK Giri spoke at length about the significance of having a compact data stating, “The database would enable policy makers and analyst to assess the impact of economic liberalization process on entrepreneurial activities especially in the unorganized sector.”
He also stated that with the growing importance of service sector, the
necessity for reliable and timely data pertaining to various sector including the service sector at regular interval has assumed great importance due to its significance contribution towards the gross domestic product (GDP) and also in the generation of employment.
Delivering the inaugural speech, Principal Secretary Incharge of Planning department, RM Mishra said that the data collected through the economic census in the state will provide useful information for improving the data base of the state economy.
He also stressed on the important and reliable data of economic census for effective planning process in policy matter of the country and the state stating that “The census has a great role for upliftment the economic activity of the country and state as a whole.”
Meanwhile, addressing the gathering, the Director of Economics & Statistics, A Marbaniang said that the Sixth Economic Census is a very important activity as it provides detailed information and bridge up the data gap relating to agriculture and non agriculture sector of the economy especially unorganized segments of the country’s economy.
It was further informed that under the Collection of Statistics Act 2008, the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Government of Meghalaya in collaboration with the Central Statistics Office, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India, will be conducting the VI Economic Census in the State of Meghalaya during the Month of May -July 2013.
