Agartala: Opposition Congress MLA and former CPI(M) leader Jitendra Sarkar has urged the assembly Speaker to take steps to increase security for him and his family as he apprehends threats from ruling party cadres.
Mr Sarkar informed the Assembly that CPI(M) ministers and leaders had targeted him soon after the election when they failed to prevent his win from a party dominated constituency.
“Whenever I wanted to speak in the Assembly, ruling party representatives, including the parliamentary affairs minister and other senior ministers, become furious and openly threaten and abuse me,” Mr Sarkar said in the House.
He also pointed out that he and his family members had been receiving threats and intimidation for leaving the party. This increased when he was elected from the opposition.
Mr Sarkar apprehended that he might be attacked anytime and hence required immediate enhancement of security. However, the Speaker did not react.
His statement came when ruling party members abused Mr Sarkar yesterday when he was speaking on post-poll violence demanding compensation to the victims. Both ruling and opposition party members were at well in a belligerent mood, which compelled Deputy Speaker Pabitra Kar to adjourn the House.
Later, Congress state president Sudip Roy Baman alleged that the behaviour of treasury bench members, including Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, made it clear that they could not tolerate Mr Jitendra Sarkar and any incident might happen any time. (UNI)
