Jeebon Roy’s contributions recalled

 SHILLONG: The contributions made to Khasi Literature and education by Jeebon Roy were recalled at a solemn function held here at the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad Hall in Jail Road to mark the 110th death anniversary of this great laureate of the State.

Experts spoke of the variety of contributions made by this great Khasi leader towards the upliftment of the Khasi Society and the non European residents of Shillong.

Former Chief Secretary of Meghalaya and currently the Expert Member of the National Green Tribunal, Ranjan Chatterjee referred to Babu Jeebon Roy as “The father of modern Khasis who lived ahead of his times in thought and deed and one who left behind a great legacy”.

To mark the occasion, a Bronze Bust of Jeebon Roy which was modelled and casted by Pynshngain Langpen and his colleagues was unveiled by the Chief Guest.

Pynshngain who is a product of the Vishwas Bharati University, Shantineketan was facilitated for this fine work of art by the Jeebon Roy Memorial Welfare Institute.

Prizes were also awarded by the Chief Guest to the school children of different schools, who had participated in the Sit and Draw and Recitation Competitions, which were held in the run-up to the Jeebon Roy Memorial Day 2013.
