Agartala: President Pranab Mukherjee would formally open the commercial run of Palatana’s first unit in newly created Gomoti district on June 21 next, according to official sources.

According to sources, the President would dedicate the first unit of 726- MW power plant at Palatana to the nation at a simple ceremony.

To mark the commissioning the Northeast’s biggest thermal power project, a mammoth rally would be organised at Jamjuri School ground, close to Palatana power plant on the same day. Over 20,000 people are expected to witness the historic journey of the mega power project.

To review the status of the testing, PWD Minister Badal Chowdhury, RD Minister Jitendra Chowdhury and Power Minister Manik Dey have already visited the Palatana power plant site. Besides inspection, they also held a meeting with OTPC Managing Director SK Dube at Palatana site.

According to OTPC sources, the trial run of the Palatana’s first unit has not been started yet.

“The trial run will start after conducting of testing of the power project. We are trying our level best to stable the project before going for tribal run,” said Dube.

First unit of Palatana power project was scheduled to be held much earlier but could not take place due to technical problems.

After removing technical faults, the first unit has been put on testing run of turbines. Now, it has been decided that the project would be formally opened on June 21 next.

After the commercial running of Palatana power project, the overall power shortage in Northeast region would be mitigated to some extend as six states will receive power from the mega power project.
