SHILLONG: The FKJGP Williamnagar circle along with other Williamnagar-based NGOs under the banner of Joint Action Committee (JAC) on Tuesday condemned the alleged harassment of members of the local NGOs by two police officers of South Garo Hills. While demanding an apology from the policemen within 15 days, the JAC also called for stern action against the duo besides urging the concerned authorities to transfer the erring cops.

In a letter issued to the Deputy Commissioner of South Garo Hills on

Monday, the JAC alleged that GSU Williamnagar sports secretary, Armith M Sangma was assaulted and abused by the in-charge of Nongalbibra Police Station, Ahmed Ali Sheikh on May 16.

“Sangma was on his way to Williamnagar in Pattalgittim area when the police officer, who was on regular patrolling duty along with his companion stopped Sangma and asked for his identity card”, the letter stated.

“While identifying himself as a teacher in a private school (Sintang Memorial LP School at Rongding Awe) Sangma also showed his identity card of the union but the police assaulted and abused him instead,” the letter said.

Having learnt of the incident, the JAC members went to the Nongalbibra PS on May 18 for clarification but were allegedly ill treated by the same police officer who was present there.

“Furthermore, the concerned Deputy Superintendent of Police, South Garo Hills, Chuang M. Sangma (Saawanlai) received the Williamnagar-based NGOs with an unwelcoming harsh tone and accused them instead without bothering to settle the matter,” the letter mentioned.
