SHILLONG: The Division Bench of the High Court of Meghalaya has sent a proposal to the State Government to convert the heritage Tara Ghar building into a High Court Guest House.
While hearing the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by ICARE opposing the move by the Government to construct the Assembly Secretariat building at Tara Ghar on Monday, the Division Bench comprising of Chief Justice T Meena Kumari and Justice T Nandakumar Singh passed an order where it was stated that a proposal has been meted out by this court to the learned State Advocate General KS Kynjing to convey to the State Government to convert the said building as a ‘High Court Guest House’ in view of the inconveniences cause to the learned judges of the Supreme Court and high courts who visit the State.
The Advocate General has sought two weeks to apprise the Court on its proposal.
Meanwhile, VGK Kynta, the counsel for the PIL petitioner has welcomed this noble suggestion of the court.
“I am of the view that the Government should not hesitate in accepting the suggestion of the court to convert Tara Gara building into a High Court Guest House,” he said.
Meanwhile, ICARE president Toki Blah who was responsible in filing of the PIL expressed his gratefulness to the court for taking a wise decision by stalling the construction of the Assembly building at Tara Ghar.
“The court has recognized that Tara Ghar is a heritage building. It has also taken cognizance of the environmental impact if trees are axed to pave way for construction of the Assembly building at Tara Ghar,” he said.
