SHILLONG: Residents in different localities of the city have complained that the essential food commodities under the Public Distribution System are not being distributed through fair price shops.

Residents said that the non availability of commodities like rice and sugar in Government fair price shops is becoming a major problem for them as now they are forced to buy commodities from open market at a much higher price.

The Deputy Commissioner (Supply), East Khasi Hills Sanjay Goyal however said that there should not be such situation as the department is continuously releasing commodities and accordingly informing people about the release.

“If anyone is not getting the commodities, they should bring the matter to our knowledge,” Goyal said.

Meanwhile, there are also rumors among people that the Government would stop the release of commodities through the PDS.

However, sources said that the Central Government is thinking of introducing direct benefit transfer system where a fixed amount would be deposited in the account of the beneficiaries and he can buy any essential commodity from the amount.

At present, essential commodities is being distributed through Government fair price shops.

The initiative is being discussed by the Central Government and it is yet to arrive at a decision with regards to the introduction of direct benefit transfer system.
