SHILLONG: The State Transport Department is all set to implement the single window system to relieve the public of the burden of moving from one government office to another for various official works like acquiring a permit etc.
“The purpose of implementing the single window is to speed up works relating to the Transport department and ease the problems of people at large,” Transport Minister HDR Lyngdoh said.
Highlighting on the procedure of the system, Lyngdoh said through the single window, people could pay various taxes like road tax, passenger and goods tax besides others at the same place and ‘everything will be processed in one shot.’
While pointing out that the present system in the department has brought a lot of difficulty to the public as the process is time consuming, the Minister said, “If the single window system is implemented, the public could even get their permit in a day.
This will be of great help to the people, especially those coming from far-flung areas.”
According to Lyngdoh complaints on the complications involved in registration for permits and vehicle-related documents had prompted the immediate proposal for the implementation of the single window system.
“As of now, we are preparing the report and the same will be forwarded to the Cabinet very soon so as to get an approval to implement this system at the earliest,” he said.
Reacting to the allegations on the various anomalies at the office of the District Transport officer, especially in Shillong, the Transport Minister said, “I hope that as soon as the new DTO assumes office, everything will be brought back to order.”
Further, Lyngdoh also informed that the department will look after the welfare of all the employees of the DTO to ensure that they are not stuck in one post for 15-20 years as it used to be. “Transfer orders will be processed and they will be transferred anywhere be it from the DTO right to the Directorate,” he added.
He also mentioned that the department has already ordered inspection of the functioning of all the DTOs from time to time to ensure smooth functioning of the offices.
On allegations on the increased number of agents working at the DTO office in Shillong, the Transport Minister said that arrangement has been made to ensure that people from outside do not get a chance to interfere with the works related to the DTO office.
