SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) has initiated a slew of measures at Umiam, Ri Bhoi, the gateway to Meghalaya, to attract tourists.

MTDC Chairman David Nongrum and Director RC Sohkhlet and other Tourism officials carried out a spot visit to the water sports complex at Umiam Lake and the Orchid Lake Resort to take stock of the amenities.

After the visit, Nongrum said that the Corporation will upgrade the infrastructure of Orchid Lake Resort.

Moreover, there is also a plan to purchase more boats to be placed at Umiam Lake to attract tourists, he added.

There are only five boats at Umiam Lake, but the motors of the boats are not functioning on most occasions.

“Umiam is a place frequented by tourists from Assam and elsewhere in the country and we are planning to upgrade the cottages and the conference hall of Umiam Lake Resort. Moreover, a swimming pool at the Resort, which has already been constructed, will be an added attraction,” Nongrum said.

According to Nongrum, the Corporation is also planning several other initiatives to provide better services to the people who visit the Resort.

“We will hold musical evenings on Fridays and Saturdays at the Resort which will be an added attraction for the visitors,” he stated.

Since the occupancy rate at the Resort is only 30 per cent, Nongrum hopes that the new initiatives will help to attract more tourists from outside the State.
