Four drown, 40 missing after boat capsizes in West Bengal

MALDA: At least four persons, including a woman drowned, and more than 40 others were missing after a boat capsized in the Ganga River in West Bengal’s Malda district on Friday. Officials said a country boat carrying about 60 passengers, mostly daily labourers, capsized after it left Dharampur bank towards the char (riverine) island at 7.30am. Four bodies, including that of a woman, have been fished out by the rescuers who are mostly locals, while eight persons were rescued. Nearly 40 others are still missing. Senior district and police officials are camping on the spot and supervising rescue operations. (PTI)

 

Rape victim attacked

Muzaffarnagar: A rape victim and her husband were seriously injured when an accused along with his four associates attacked them in a court compound here, police said today. The incident happened yesterday evening when the rape victim had come to the court along with her husband to give her statement in a case of abduction and rape, they said. A case has been registered against Sunit and four others, police said, adding that one of them has been arrested in this connection. 26-year-old woman was allegedly abducted and raped by Sunit a year ago. BJP district farmers’ front leader killed in road mishap

Bhind: President of the BJP’s district Kisan Morcha S S Kang was killed and six others injured when the vehicle in which they were travelling collided with a tractor-trolley on Thursday night on the Bhind-Gwalior national highway. Police said here today that they had gone to attend a programme in which Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was present. On their way back, their vehicle collided with a tractor-trolley resulting in the mishap. Kang died on the spot and the injured have been admitted to the district hospital for treatment. (PTI)
