SHILLONG: Acknowledging her feat, first Meghalaya woman to conquer the Mount Everest, Wansuk Myrthong was felicitated by the Dorbar shnong of Raid Laban at a function organised at the premises of the Bharat Scouts and Guides here on Saturday.
Myrthong who was felicitated alongside other residents of the locality, who excelled in their respective fields of sports, was awarded Rs 50, 000 while the other awardees also received similar cash reward for their contribution.
Referring to sincerity, hardwork and dedication as the major factors responsible for achievement, Myrthong said the experience was not smooth but it was worth it even while she urged the youth to follow their dreams and make use of their God gifted talent in various field of interest.
30-year-old Wansuk, a woman armed police constable in the 1st Meghalaya Police battalion, is one among the 16 climbers of the first Northeast India Top of the World Mount Everest Expedition, 2013 which was flagged off by President Pranab Mukherjee from Rashtrapati Bhavan on March 20.
Lauding and congratulating Myrthong for her achievement, former Former state chief secretary, Peter J Bazeley said that this is a time of awakening to show women are strong and capable.
Stating that time has changed the world in many ways, Bazeley said “The World has changed and there are opportunities waiting for you to take it by its horn,” adding that the endeavour may be risky but nothing is impossible to be achieved.
Calling upon the youth to explore the opportunities the modern era holds and not be confined to mere white collar jobs, the former CS said that there is a need to bring in change in the thought process of achieving dreams.
