SHILLONG: The State police on Wednesday said that a prayer to declare Narul Islam, who allegedly raped two minor sisters in Ampati, a proclaimed offender has been submitted to the court.

The statement came from the state police after the police department was alleged of failing to arrest Sub Inspector Islam.

Meghalaya DGP Prem Singh on Wednesday said that the message has been sent to all police stations in Assam and Meghalaya to arrest the accused besides raids have also been conducted at various locations in both the states.

It may be mentioned that the opposition NPP has dragged the Chief Minister’s mother into the controversy saying that the government is dilly-dallying the arrest of the accused as he is a “relative of Dr. Mukul Sangma’s mother Roshanara Begum.”

According to DGP, a look-out notice has been issued to all the superintendents of police in India indicating the description of the accused.

Islam was picked up on June 1 on charges of rape and molestation. However, he escaped from police custody from Tura, the district headquarters of West Garo Hills. The DGP also asserted that the bank and FD accounts of the accused have been frozen to put pressure on him.
