SHILLONG: With an aim to strengthen the party ahead of Lok Sabha as well as District Council elections, the state Congress has taken an initiative to bring back those senior leaders to its fold who had left it after being denied ticket in the recently concluded Assembly elections.
One such move by the party was seen in the Shella Block Congress Committee (SBCC).
It is reported that the party has managed to convince the former SBCC president Leston Wanswett, who had contested the Assembly election as an independent after being denied the party ticket.
With the return of Wanswett the Congress will consolidate its position in Shella constituency, which has always been the stronghold of the UDP.
There is no denying of the fact that Wanswett could have defeated former Chief Minister Dr Donkupar Roy had the Congress fought the election unitedly.
The East Khasi Hills District Congress Committee (EKHDCC) organised a special meeting at Sohra on Wednesday to formally welcome Wanswett back to the party fold.
Welcoming Wanswett’s return to the party, EKHDCC SG Khongiong said, ‘Let us start a new beginning. We should unitedly fight the district council and Lok Sabha polls to ensure victory of the party candidates”.
Wanswett in his response said he was happy to return to the party. “I am a Congressman for the past so many years,” he added.
