Shillong: Ferrari Ki Sawaari director Rajesh Mapuskar is in Shillong to try and put together a storyline for a movie he desires to make with Shillong Chamber Choir (SCC).
Mapuskar has been here since June 5 and will be around for a couple of more days.
Not one to make a Bollywood type, run of the mill movie Mapuskar is one of those enlightened film makers who wishes to understand the nuances of the Khasi and North-Eastern culture which has formed the world view of the members of the SCC.
“I first heard the SCC at a function in Mumbai and was completely mesmerized. I wondered who these extraordinary singers were. They didn’t look Indian. Some of them, in fact, look very Oriental. I asked around and tried to find out more about them. I heard them a second time and decided to contact them. Coincidentally I met Donna and other SCC members in the lift of the hotel they were staying in. I asked for their contact number. They gave me the manager’s card. I rang up the number several times with no success. I almost gave up.” Mapuskar said.
Later he heard them singing Sare Jahaan Se Acchha with Amitabh Bachchan. “I knew they had made it big and wondered if they would respond to me. Fortunately I was able to make contact with their manager, Damon Lyndem and now that I am here, it is so inspiring to see the Choir and observe their life from close quarters,” Mapuskar told this correspondent.
He spent considerable time with Neil Nongkynrih, Director SCC trying to get as many angles to the movie as he could possibly gather. From the little that Mapuskar narrated about his script the movie sounds like it will be a major hit.
Ferrari Ki Sawaari was produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and stars Sharman Joshi in the lead. The film was released in June 2012 and is a great hit with young cricket lovers.
Mapuskar is here with his two sons.
