SHILLONG: If any one visits the Secretariat and other Government offices at 10 am, one would find empty chairs and rooms besides few employees who make it to the Secretariat as soon as the office timing begins.

However, it is a fact that many of the employees start their office hours and end it at their own will and they are not even bothered by the State Government to change the trend. The Secretariat Administration (SAD) Minister Deborah Marak however has passed the buck to the State Chief Secretary to check the activities of late comers and early goers.

“The Chief Secretary has to look and take action at the activities of the Government employees,” Deborah Marak told reporters here while adding that the chief Secretary can take the initiative of conducting inspections.

If one goes to the rooms of the Secretariat, one can easily find many employees playing games or surfing “Facebook” in their computers or giggling with their fellow employees.

The Minister also believes that there is a large scope to improve the work culture in the State as improvement will bring benefit to the State and the Government. The work culture in Meghalaya was as its high when the state was under President’s Rule and all employees were quite punctual in attending their duties.

According to Marak, the Government employees are expected to do their job efficiently as ministers also put their extra effort by doing extra time on many occasions. The Minister has conducted inspections of the Secretariat on two occasions and she is of the view that some rooms of the Secretariat needs to be given facelift
