SHILLONG: With state government deciding to constitute a delimitation commission, which will go into details on the issue of realigning the constituencies in the three autonomous district councils of the state, the present tenure of the three councils is likely to be extended.
The Government will move the Governor with a proposal to extend the tenure of the district councils to complete delimitation of constituencies.
“There are provisions in the Constitution which empowers the Governor to extend the tenure of a district council,” official sources said here on Tuesday.
The Governor is examining the proposal of the State Government to constitute a delimitation commission, sources said adding that the government wants to hold the next elections to the three councils, due in early part of 2014, in the delimitated constituencies.
Official sources also indicated that the council election is likely to be delayed if the Government decides to conduct the same after the proposed realignment of constituencies.
The District Council Affairs department of KHADC has sent the Delimitation Bill to the Governor for his approval but the Government is already contemplating to set up a delimitation commission so that the Commission can hold public hearings and hear the opinion of stakeholders before delimiting the autonomous district council constituencies.
Recently, the Delimitation Bill was passed in KHADC session amid stiff protests from few members of the House.
MDC from Laitkroh, Carmel Sohtun expressed his strong protest against the move to do away with Laitkroh as a constituency.
