Regional quota in medical courses
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday sought response from the Medical Council of India (MCI), the North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) and the governments of Tamil Nadu and Kerala on a plea challenging the regional reservation in admissions in super speciality medical courses.
A bench comprising of justices KS Radhakrishnan and A K Sikri was hearing a petition filed by Dr Pravin Kumar Jha which alleged that the practice of making regional reservation in super speciality medical courses by University in Meghalaya and states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala is contrary to the Constitution of India.
The petition claimed that such practice adopted by these universities was a ‘colourable exercise of power’ since power to regulate higher education is solely vested with the Centre.
Senior advocate Ajit Kumar Sinha, who appeared for the petitioner, told the bench that in super speciality medical courses, only merit on all India basis should be the criteria governing the admissions. (PTI)
