SHILLONG: Shortly after the State government put on hold the ongoing enrolment drive for the National Population Register (NPR), the East Khasi Hills district administration is all set to conduct the awareness on NPR in Shillong and other parts of the district probably by next week.
“I will have to go through the details first and then decide on the dates to hold such awareness programmes for the general public which could probably start from next week,” East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal said here on Saturday.
Goyal, who is currently out of station has stated that soon after he arrives on Monday, details of the NPR will be studied and subsequently, teams will be deployed to conduct the awareness programme in various parts of the district.
It was also informed that official notification was being processed for involving the local village authorities in the NPR enrolment process and the role of the traditional authorities will be defined in the notification to be issued soon. The State government was forced to put on hold the enrollment drive after the KSU had intervened and stopped the drive from being carried out justifying that the enrolment camps were being organised despite an assurance by the State Government on July 19 that the enrolment under the NPR would be undertaken in Meghalaya only after proper awareness among the people of the State.
The KSU maintained that the Government should first familiarize the people with this new system of biometric enrolment so that the people can learn about the importance of NPR and its benefits.
