SHILLONG: Amendment to the Meghalaya Catchment Areas Act, 1990 seems still far away as the Planning Department, which is examining the proposed amendment, continues to sit on the file for last 10 months.
Stating that the Government recognizes the urgent need to approve the proposed amendment, Forest and Environment Minister, Prestone Tynsong yet again assured that the final call would be taken on the issue once Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma returned from South Africa.
“We would definitely arrive at a decision once the Chief Minister returns,” Tynsong said here on Tuesday.
According to Tynsong, the Chief Minister is expected to convene a meeting to finalise the proposed amendment.
Earlier in June, Tynsong had admitted that the Government cannot afford any further delay in the proposed amendment in the wake of rapid depletion of catchments areas in various parts of the State. However, despite the growing concerns, the status of the proposed amendment has visibly remained stagnant.
