SHILLONG: Government is all set to terminate the service another rape-accused police official Nurul Islam.
“I have issued the order to sack Islam and necessary formalities will be done before he is dismissed from service,” the DGP PJP Hanaman said here on Wednesday.
The DGP statement came a day after government sacked a former sub-inspector of Rynjah police station SN Roy, who was accused of raping a Class XII student in a city hotel two years back.
Islam, a sub inspector of Meghalaya police, allegedly had raped two sisters in Ampati, the home constituency of Chief Minster Dr Mukul Sangma.
Islam had allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl in Ampati police station on March 13 this year. On March 31, he raped the victim’s 17-year-old sister at gunpoint in their house.
The police have already issued a look notice for Islam, but in vain. The accused failed to respond to surrender notice issued by police.
According to Hanaman, people expect certain standard of behaviour from the men in uniform.
The DGP, however, admitted lapses on the part of police in handling the case.
“The accused should have been arrested and kept in a police station instead of taking him somewhere,” Hanaman said. Islam disappeared from his quarter soon after the incident came to light.
