CM inaugurates city school’s golden jubilee celebrations

 Shillong: Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma on Wednesday inaugurated the year-long golden jubilee celebration of the Synod Higher Secondary School, Shillong in the presence of Home Minister Roshan Warjri, Rev. DR Sohkhlet, Moderator Khasi Jaintia Presbyterian Assembly (KJPA), Rev. NS Phawa, Senior Administrative Secretary KJPA, Rev. P Dkhar, Moderator KJP Synod Sepngi and president of the School Managing Committee, WS Challam, District School Education Officer, Mrs. DR Shullai, Principal Synod Higher Secondary School, prominent local people, teachers and students.

The School was established in 1964 under the stewardship of Ms. Gwen Catherine Evans. The year-long celebration of the school will come to a close on August 14, 2014. During the celebrations, quiz, debate, food fest, art exhibition, inter school science exhibition, school concert, musical evening, varieties show and sports and games will be organized.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sangma lauded the school authorities for achieving this historic milestone and expressed his deep appreciation to Ms. Gwen Catherine Evans, founder of the School, who responded to the educational need of the society at that point of time.

Appealing to teachers to consider teaching as a mission and not as a profession Dr. Sangma pointed out that teaching is not only to impart quality education but also to groom and shape up the minds of the students so that they can excel in their studies, adding that teaching is also to prepare the students to take up greater responsibilities for progressive and productive career.

Dr. Sangma informed the School management that they should take advantage of the Chief Minister’s Career Counseling and Career Guidance Scheme to access opportunities for the students in choosing their appropriate careers. He urged upon the teachers to be kind and encouraging, friendly and inspirational and ever ready to help the students in every which way they can.

Warjri, in her address, said that the school despite heavy odds, still stands strong and grows from strength to strength and this in her opinion is due to the dedication of the teachers and the active participation of the local community which has enable the school management to carry forward the torch of knowledge.

Later in the day, the Chief Minister inaugurated the newly constructed Commerce block of the School.
