SHILLONG: With an aim to provide shelter for the economically deprived sections of the population, the State Government will soon come up with an ‘affordable housing scheme’.
Housing Minister Zenith Sangma informed that the State Government has taken the decision to come up with the scheme to help those sections of the population who, despite being poor, are yet to be included in the BPL list.
Sangma pointed out that the Government is preparing the guidelines for the scheme which is likely to take off in two months’ time from now.
The Government is currently engaged in talks with a Switzerland-based firm to implement the project in the State.
According to Sangma, the proposed scheme will be free of all deficiencies ailing the Rural Housing Scheme, which is fraught with loopholes, since it can be easily misused by way of selling the construction materials.
It is learnt that the Government is exploring new technology for the proposed housing project that allows a house to be built on a single day using steel as the main material without the use of nuts and bolts.
To a query, the Minister pointed out that the State Government is planning to construct around ten thousand housing units under the scheme in the first phase.
