SHILLONG:  Noted psychiatrist of Meghalaya and the North East, Dr Sandi Syiem was attacked during the bandh hours on Monday while he was on his way to SANKER Nursing Home at Mawlai Mawroh.
Normally those who sponsor bandhs and other forms of  agitations would  exempt hospitals and other essential services from the purview of the bandh but Monday’s blatant attack on  Dr Syiem has come as a rude shock.
Miscreants enforcing the bandh hurled metallic pellets using their catapults which resulted in extensive damage to the vehicle of Dr Syiem, a Scorpio. The pellets came from two different directions. Were they to have hit Dr Syiem he would have been seriously injured.
When contacted, Dr Syiem said that he was attacked while he was driving his vehicle at around 9 am on Monday. He was travelling from his home to the nursing home which is a distance of about 300 metres.
While two particles of lead which came from the front damaged the windscreen of the front portion of the vehicle another which came from behind damaged the windscreen at the back.
Dr Syiem has filed an FIR with the local police station in this regard.
Meanwhile as soon as people got to know of the incident from Facebook posts and other social media network they condemned the attack on Dr Syiem and held the NGOs who have called the bandh responsible. Many feel that the Supreme Court directive that bandh callers must be held responsible for damage caused to public property needs to be invoked in Meghalaya.
