AHRC directs payment of relief to victim’s family

Guwahati: Assam Human Rights Commission (ASHRC) has directed Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) and Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) to pay Rs three lakh as interim compensation to the next of the kin of Manab Barman, an employee of Sarba Siksha Abhiyan, who died due to electrocution after at Ganeshguri locality in Guwahati city.

A Division Bench of the Assam Human Rights Commission comprising its Chairperson, Dr. Justice Aftab H. Saikia and Member, Tarun Phookan, by its order passed in AHRC Case No.858/9/13-14 recommended for granting immediate interim relief, pending the disposal of the case, of Rs three Lakhs only being compensation to the next of kin of the deceased Manab Barman of Nalbari being payable within 30 days by both the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) in equal proportion.

Manab Barman died due to electrocution on September at about 7 P.M at Ganeshguri area in the city while crossing the road-divider near the B.K. Tower after coming in contact with an exposed live electric wire connected inside the iron fencing of the divider for lighting glow- advertisement-board.

Negligence and indifference of both the APDCL and the GMC are alleged to have been responsible for the tragic death of the person.

The Commission had ordered for an effective enquiry into the incident to be conducted by the Commissioner, Lower Assam Division (LAD), Guwahati, within 30 days.
