Rejection of ILP demand

SHILLONG: The FKJGP has slammed the State Government for failing to respect the sentiment of the people by saying no to the implementation of the ILP in the State.

“It looks like the Congress would not implement anything which is not mentioned in its party manifesto. It is sad that the party has to wait for its party high command to decide on issues affecting the indigenous population of the State,” FKJGP publicity Eldie Newton Lyngdoh said here on Thursday.

He also stated that the Government’s decision to implement the proposed Tenancy Act would pave way for illegal immigrants to stay as tenants in the State.

“Initially these illegal immigrants would stay as tenants. But in no time they would become permanent residents. This is a very dangerous ploy of the Congress Government,” Lyngdoh said.

While maintaining that the NGOs have no problem with entry of tourists and genuine Indian citizens, Lyngdoh said that they have been demanding the implementation of ILP to check the entry of illegal immigrants.

“With the ILP, we can monitor the movement of people from outside who come to the State,” the FKJGP said.

Mentioning that that the HLC on Influx was constituted by the then Congress-led MUA-I Government, the FKJGP leader said, “After coming back to power, the same Congress Government is now rejecting the recommendations of the Committee.”

He stated that this is a clear indication of the Government’s attempt to mislead the people of the State.

The FKJGP also came down heavily on Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma, saying that instead of attempting to calm down the situation the Chief Minister was ‘adding fuel to fire’ by making provoking statements.

“We would want to make it clear that we would not bow down from our demands,” the FKJGP leader while urging the people to continue their support to the NGOs till the demand to implement the ILP is achieved.

Don’t equate NGOs with terror groups: HSPDP

HSPDP vice president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit on Thursday asked Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma not to equate the NGOs with terrorist organisations.

“I am shocked that the Chief Minister had said that he would talk with the NGOs only if they call off their agitation. It is the same like asking the terrorist organisations to give up arms for facilitating dialogue,” Basaiawmoit said here on Thursday.

He said that Dr. Sangma should not forget that it is the failure of the Government to address this issue for so many years that has led to the NGOs to call for agitation.

Basaiawmoit also wondered why Dr. Sangma, despite repeatedly talking about a ‘comprehensive mechanism’ to address the issue of influx, is yet to come out with any details on the same. “May be the comprehensive mechanism is only in the mind of the Chief Minister,” the HSPDP leader said.

He, however, said that the Chief Minister should realize that majority of the people were in support of ILP in the State.

The HSPDP leader also alleged that the Congress does not want the ILP since it would affect the party’s vote bank.

He also called upon the Congress MLAs to forget their party affiliation and realize the issue that concerns the ‘life and death’ of the local indigenous people.
