SHILLONG: Continuing its tirade against the MUA-II government over implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) system, Opposition UDP has reiterated its demand for the resignation of Dr Mukul Sangma saying the Chief Minister has failed to respect the sentiments of people of the State.
The party legislator Jemino Mawthoh on Thursday blamed Dr Sangma for the ongoing unrest the state is witnessing over ILP issue.
Without mincing his words, Mawthoh termed the Chief Minister as ‘irresponsible’ and ‘non-committal’ towards addressing the issue of illegal migrants.
Mawthoh said, “We have no intention to topple the State Government, we simply want a change in the leadership.”
Stating that the issue of implementation of the ILP has been lingering for decades, he said, “Government is not adopting the right approach to address this issue. Instead of attempting to resolve it, the Chief Minister is making irresponsible statements which might ignite the whole situation.”
Mawthoh also pointed out that government has been maintaining a silence over the recommendations of the High Level Committee (HLC) on Influx.
“If the Committee has recommended implementation of ILP it must have been on some valid grounds,” the Nongthymmai legislator said.
While accusing Dr Sangma of functioning like a dictator, the UDP legislator said, “It is an open secret that many of his colleagues are unhappy with his style of functioning. But they don’t dare to come out in the open.”
The Chief Minister, Mawthoh said, has even failed to tackle the law and situation in Garo Hills which deprives him of the moral right to continue to rule the State.
