Bangladeshi national apprehended

Tezpur: A Bangladeshi national was apprehended by the police in Assam’s Sonitpur district, police said on Sunday. Acting on a tip-off, the police apprehended the person from Rakshyamari area of the district Saturday evening. The person has been identified as Abdul Kalam and during interrogation he claimed that he had crossed the Indo-Bangla border with the help of brokers, police said. He also claimed that he had come down from Delhi to collect his wife who hailed from the area, sources added. (PTI)

 Nagaland SASRD organises ‘Naga Kheti Mela’ in October

Kohima: The School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development (SASRD), Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus in collaboration with Nagaland Department of Agriculture and ICAR, Research Complex for North East Hill Region, Jharnapani under Dimapur district, would be organising ‘Naga Kheti Mela, 2013’ from October 17 to 19 at SASRD, Medziphema campus. According to official sources the Naga Kheti Mela is being organised with the objective to create a platform for effective transfer of technologies to the farming community. This event will be the first of its kind initiative in the state where Nagaland University, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Research Complex for NEH Region, Jharnapani, Nagaland and the Agriculture and allied Departments would come together to create an effective way of technology transfer to our farming community. ‘Naga Kheti Mela, 2013′, will focus on demonstration of technologies, exhibition of produces and products, interactive sessions of farmers with experts as well as video shows on modern agricultural technologies. The event will be sponsored by National Horticulture Board (NHB), Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH), Small Farmers’ Agri-Business Consortium (SFAC), Department of Agriculture, Government of Nagaland and Department of Land Resources, Government of Nagaland, sources said.  Haj pilgrims leave Imphal

Imphal: Haj pilgrims of Manipur left Imphal ton Saturday by air. Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam went to the Tulihal airport to see the devotees off. About 227 Haj pilgrims from Manipur will be part of the Indian worshippers and they will be going in batches. Gaikhangam wished them safe journey and appealed to the pilgrims to pray for peace and development. Members of Parliament, Ministers and MLAs also came to the airport to see the devotees off. (UNI)

Second convocation of Assam Don Bosco varsity held

Guwahati: The second convocation of Assam Don Bosco University was held on Saturday at its Azara campus where degrees were conferred on 298 students, of whom 192 students received bachelor’s degree in Engineering & Technology, 16 M.Tech, 27 MSW, 24 MCA and 39 MBA degrees. Medals were also given in various categories to 11 outstanding graduates. Ms Subra Mukherjee, an M Tech student from Nagaland topped all disciplines to receive the ADBU Chancellor’s gold medal, a release said on Sunday. The chief guest of the convocation, Prof Amar Nath Rai, director of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) explained the role NAAC plays in the assessment and accreditation of higher educational institutions in maintenance and enhancement of quality standards in higher educational institutions in the country. Youth injures woman

Haflong (Assam): A youth seriously injured a woman with a knife before trying to commit suicide here, police said on Saturday. The 20-year-old woman was attacked by a mechanic B Chanda (25) in her residence when her parents were out on Friday. As the woman suffered serious wounds on her head and neck, the youth struck the same weapon in the back of his neck. Locals, who came to the spot hearing screams, intercepted the youth and both were rushed to Haflong Civil Hospital. (PTI)
