Assam Rifles nabs NSCN (KK) cadre with arms in Nagaland

Kohima: Based on specific information about tax collection by cadre of NSCN (KK), troops of 37 Assam Rifles placed mobile check post and arrested one from NSCN (Khole-Kitovi) group.

According to a statement issued by PRO of IGAR (North) the Ione cadre of NSCN (KK) namely Kevepfolo, (41), from Jharnapani area on National Highwas-29. yesterday The cadre was identified to be a Tatar of NSCN (KK) and was moving from Kohima to Dimapur in Gypsy. Three extortion slips and four mobile phones were recovered from him.

The arrested along with recoveries was handed over to Medziphema police late in the evening on September 20. He was further handed over to Phek police in relation to an already pending case against him, the statement said. (UNI)

Arunachal asks Centre to withdraw coal block suspension

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh has pleaded the Centre to review and withdraw the suspension order on mining operation and disposal of coal at Namchik-Namphuk block in Changlang district of the state.

The Coal Controller during May last year suspended coal production from the block allocated to Arunachal Pradesh Mineral Development and Trading Corporation Limited (APMDTCL) following reports of involvement of underground activists in illegal mining of coal.

“The union home ministry in a letter on March last year requested the coal ministry to take over the mine by Coal India Limited to take control of mining of mineral resources in the state so that pilferage is stopped and the insurgent groups are not able to raise resources for weapon procurement,” Chief Minister Nabam Tuki said in reply to a written question by Congress MLA Takar Marde.

Tuki, who also holds the mines and minerals portfolio further informed that the state government through a series of correspondences pleaded the Centre to withdraw the suspension order and awaiting response.

“The department of geology and mining has been pursuing vigorously to the concerned ministry to revoke the suspension order,” he added. (PTI)

Nagaland NFHRCC to take up survey on Foothill Road on Tuesday

Kohima: Nagaland Foot Hills Road Coordination Committee (NFHRCC) has worked out the details of the assignment for the joint-survey to be commenced from Tuesday.

According to an official statement issued by NFHRCC convener Supu Jamir and general secretary W Y Kithan today, the physical joint-survey would be conducted by representatives of 10 Naga tribes initially covering four districts along with state PWD (R&B).

On September 24, the NFHRCC members from Konyak and Chang tribes would proceed to Konyak sector while those from Phom and Khiamniungan would head for the Phom sector. All NFHRCC members from Ao, Sumi, Yimchunger would proceed to Ao sector while those from Lotha, Sangtam, Rengma would go to Lotha sector. The remaining members would proceed to their destinations during the next phase of joint-survey.

The NFHRCC informed that the first launch of Nagaland foot hills road construction within the parameter set by NFHRCC would be held at the residence of Committee Treasurer Yashitsungba Ao, in Khermahal in Dimapur town on September 24. NFHRCC has requested all tribal hohos, unions, Church leaders and civil society organisations to attend the send-off programme positively. (UNI)

Bandh affects normal life in central Assam

Morigaon (Assam): Stray incidents of violence during a bandh hit normal life in central Assam districts on Monday.

The bandh has been called jointly by All Tiwa Students Union and Karbi Students Union for a separate autonomous council for Tiwas under the provisions of the sixth schedule of Constitution and scheduled tribe status to Karbis living in the plain districts of Assam.

Official sources said five persons were injured as bandh supporters pelted stones at vehicles besides setting ablaze tyres in several areas in a bid to enforce the 24-hour shut down.

The bandh evoked total response in entire Morigaon district and parts of Kamrup (Metro) and Nagaon district. All schools, colleges, business and commercial establishments remained closed and vehicular traffic remained off the road, including on NH 37, the sources said.

Production was, however, not affected in Hindustan Paper Mills in Jagiroad where work continued amidst tight security provided by CISF personnel, the sources added. (PTI)
