SHILLONG: The BSF has seized a truck carrying 17 cattle in the international border on Saturday while they were being smuggled to Bangladesh.

In a statement issued here, the BSF on Saturday said that on specific inputs regarding smuggling of cattle, the BSF troops of Border Out Post at Nongjuri deployed in East Khasi Hills district launched a special joint operation with Meghalaya police and seized 17 cattle from a vehicle (ML-10A 3438). The seizure is worth Rs. 11,17,300.

According to BSF, it is evident that due to the forthcoming festival of IdUl- Zuha, the demand of cattle was likely to increase manifold in Bangladesh.

“Keeping in view of the likely demand, BSF has launched a special drive against the cattle smugglers,” the BSF said.

Accordingly, the BSF along with Meghalaya police have been laying mobile check posts on converging points to intercept cattle going towards Border for smuggling to Bangladesh, as after reaching the Zero line, due to terrain and the weather, interception becomes difficult.

The BSF also seized forest goods worth Rs 2,74,860 at Gumaghat. The seized cattle truck and forest goods were handed over to the concerned department for further disposal.
