TURA: The State’s first political family is all set to return to active politics with the grandson of Meghalaya’s first Chief Minister and founding father of the State joining the race to contest the Tura Lok Sabha seat in next year’s parliamentary elections.

The Late Captain Williamson A Sangma’s grandson, Daryl William Cheran Momin, has decided to apply for the Congress ticket to fight next year’s polls from the Tura constituency which is currently held by Agatha K Sangma of the NCP.

Twenty-six year old Daryl William, known as Bongbong to family and friends, is due to submit his nomination for the party ticket to the Congress election committee of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) this week.

Daryl is the eldest son of Fersen Ch Momin who contested and won the Tura MDC seat in 1994.

The AICC in New Delhi has asked the MPCC to forward the names of the aspirants who wish to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Tura and Shillong latest by October 15.

The contest for Shillong seat has as many as four aspirants – sitting MP Vincent Pala, OL Nongtdu, John F Kharshiing and former Assembly Speaker Charles Pyngrope.

A product of prestigious St. Xavier’s College in Kolkata where he graduated in Commerce before heading abroad to Australia to complete his MBA from Bond University, Daryl has been working closely with the youth and promoting music. As part of William Entertainment he introduced the Shillong Chamber of Commerce to the audience in Garo Hills during last year’s Winter Fest in Tura.

Political pundits are anticipating an interesting election battle between two youthful contestants should Daryl obtain the Congress party nominee and if Agatha (33) was to contest to retain her Lok Sabha seat which she won on a by-election in 2008 and later retained her seat in the 2009 general elections.
