Umwali murder case

NONGSTOIN: Last Friday, Assam Police of Langpih visited Umwali Village near Langpih with an arrest warrant issued in the names of five Khasi persons for their alleged involvement in the murder of one Nal Bahadur Dorji recently at Umwali.

However, sources informed that the names of the five persons could not be properly ascertained as the warrant contained the alias names of the perpetrators known as Joe Diengsiang, Kong Bli, Bah Spar, Bah Dengwait and brother of Bah Dengwait.

Tras Nonglang, chairman of the Village Administrative Organization Langpih Circle said “Together with the Meghalaya Police, the Assam Police had a difficult time and could not identify the names mentioned in the arrest warrant. The Assam DGP had forwarded these names to the DGP of Meghalaya and sought his co-operation to arrest those responsible for the murder at Umwali. The names have also been sent to Nongstoin Police Station to ascertain the identity and to locate and arrest them.”

He also said that the Village Administrative Organization had a meeting on Saturday at Umtap. The meeting unanimously resolved to demand the Assam Police to investigate the matter thoroughly and then identify the actual perpetrators. They also urged the Assam Police to seek the co-operation of the Meghalaya Police and the Village authorities in their investigation.

The meeting also reminded that recently two innocent Khasi residents of Langpih area were falsely implicated in this case by Assam Police. They urged the Assam Police not to arrest any innocent people as at a sensitive time such an arrest would only escalate the matter to bitter consequences.
