Imphal: An all-party team headed by Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam will visit the Indo-Myanmar border and inspect the ‘controversial erection of boundary fencing at undemarcated areas in Chandel district by Myanmar’, official sources said on Friday.

The decision to sent the team was taken late last night during a meeting of representatives of all political parties presided over by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, they said.

The team which will leave here on October 22 will inspect the boundary fencing erected by Myanmar officials in the past one or two weeks at the ‘undemarcated’ areas, sources said. Speaking to reporters, Gaikhangam said all measures would be taken to protect the territories of the state, adding that a detailed report would be submitted to Prime Minister Manmohon Singh, Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and other authorities.

The team will also urge the Centre to take up the issue with the neighbouring country.

Earlier, various social organisations had said if the illegal construction continued more than 43 villages would fall within the jurisdiction of the neighbouring country and demanded immediate discontinuation of the erection of fencing before conducting a re-survey in the area. (PTI)
