Govt to publish post-independence political history of Assam
Guwahati: Publications on the political history of Assam of the post-independence period upto 2012 will be brought out by the Assam Government in three volumes. The volumes will cover the periods 1947-1971, 1972-1990 and 1991-2012 with eminent historian Rajen Saikia as the General Editor, official sources said on Wednesday. The decision to entrust Saikia with the responsibility was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi recently, the sources said. The Secretariat Administration Department (Archives) will act as the nodal department with its Principal Secretary functioning as the coordinator of the project. The government-run Publication Board had earlier published three volumes on the Political History of Assam covering the period 1826-1947. (PTI)
Mizoram govt urged to be strict in enforcing law on illegal immigration
Aizawl: Young Mizo Association (YMA), the largest organisation of Mizos, on Wednesday adopted a resolution urging the state government to be more stringent in enforcing the law on illegal settlements and unauthorised villages. The delegates expressed serious concern over widespread illegal settlements by foreigners in the border areas without permission from authorities. The YMA, in its general conference held at the Mizoram-Myanmar border Khawbung village, appealed to the government to enforce the Mizoram Revenue Act, 2013 strictly. Expressing concern over fast depleting water resources due to degradation of forests, the YMA urged the government to create a large number of water resources safety reserves across the state. The YMA also asked the government not to construct the Tipaimukh Hydro Electric Project on the Mizoram-Manipur border as the dam would displace many Mizos and submerge large areas of Mizoram. (PTI)
Congress MLA Sushanta Borgohain’s quarter burgled
Guwahati: The official quarter of Congress MLA Sushanta Borgohain was burgled in the high security Dispur capital complex in Guwahati, police sources said on Wednesday. Rs three lakh, a land sale agreement and other valuables were looted from two steel wardrobes which were broken open when Borgohain and his family members were away, the sources said. On return today, the MLA found a rod in the bedroom window was cut by the thieves to enter the house to burgle, they said. A person working in his house has been picked up for interrogation, police added. Borgohain told reporters that the Rs three lakh kept with a land sale agreement and other valuables were looted besides things in his quarter ransacked. The MLA and his party legislator Chandan Sarkar expressed their resentment that thieves could enter the high security MLA Hostel complex which has a three-tier security system. Sarkar criticising the Home Department of slackness in its vigil asserted, “if MLAs are not safe then what is the condition of the common people whose houses are regularly burgled. Strong action has to be taken by the administration.” (PTI)
Physically challenged woman raped by brother-in-law in Manipur
Imphal: A physically challenged woman was allegedly raped by her brother-in-law at Tangkham Awang Leikaian village in Imphal East district of Manipur, police said on Wednesday. School teacher Laishram Joy Kumar (41) raped the woman (22) when her parents had gone out of their house on October 11. The following day, the victim was taken to the Regional Institute of Medical Science and Hospital where she underwent medical test and the rape was confirmed, police said. Kumar, married to a distant cousin of the victim, was arrested on October 14 and remanded to police custody for six days. (PTI)
Nagaland Wildlife Warden asks for execution of wildlife Act
Kohima: In a notification, Nagaland Chief wildlife warden, Nagaland T. Lotha stated that no wildlife in any forms would be allowed to be sold or displayed in the markets/roadside stalls or in any place. The notification stated that sale of wildlife was ‘highly in contravention’ of the provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972 which has been enforced in the state from December 18, 1981, Mr. Lotha said that any breach of Wildlife Acts was punishable under Section 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972 with a fine of Rs 25,000 only or an imprisonment up to 3 years or both. It further said that, forest officers and frontline personnel have been authorized to enforce the provisions contained in Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972, in case of violation of the act by any person. Eid-ul-Zuha celebrated with gaiety
Imphal: Id-ul-Zuha was celebrated in Manipur with gaiety and devotion. Prayers were held at the mosques and Muslims greeted each other on the occasion. Mass feasts were also organised at Hatta, Kshetrigaon, Keirai and other Muslim dominated areas. Dr Ashwani Kumar, Governor said the festival embodies the spirit of sacrifice overcoming one’s ego and narrow self interest for the larger good. The festival signifies amity, brotherhood, harmony and peace amongst different communities he added. Chief Minister, O Ibobi said the festival inspires all to sacrifice selfish interests in the larger interest of the state and unite in a spirit of common brotherhood for a more peaceful and prosperous Manipur. At dawn Muslims came out dressed in new clothes and offered prayers at the mosques. Sacrifice of domestic animals was the hallmark of the festival . The meat is divided into three parts, with two parts given away to relatives and needy people. It is the responsibility of the rich to enable the poor observe the festival. Hundreds of thousands of Muslims thronged mosques to offer prayers as mass animal sacrifices, piety and spirit of brotherhood marked Eid-ul-Azha which was also celebrated across the country on Wednesday with traditional fervour.Muslims rededicated themselves to Islamic tenets of love and piety to mark the Festival of Sacrifice which commemorates the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God.
