Mock earthquake exercise today

SHILLONG: The Deputy Commissioner and the Chairman District Disaster Management Authority, East Khasi Hills has informed that siren will be sounded at around 9:00 am before the start of the Mock Exercise on Earthquake scheduled to be held on October 19 from 9:00 am to 12 noon at Jail Road and Police Bazaar areas and appeal has been made to the general public not to panic and be confused during such an exercise.

A one day Capacity Development programme (CDP) for the Mock Exercise on Earthquake was organized on Friday at Yojana Bhavan, Shillong by the State and District Management Authorities, Government of Meghalaya in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.

Meghalaya Chief Secretary, WMS Pariat attended the inaugural function as the Chief Guest in the presence of Maj. Gen. (Retd) VK Datta, Senior Consultant, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), besides others.

The day long programme includes presentations by Maj. Gen. (Retd) V. K. Datta on Incident Response System (IRS), by Sanjay Goyal on Disaster Response Plan of Shillong, by Superintendent of Police, M. Kharkrang on Disaster Response Plan of Shillong Police and presentations from District Medical and Health Officer, Fire and Emergency Service, Shillong Municipal Board, MeECL, District Transport Officer, National Disaster Response Force and others.

Later, the Deputy Commissioner has informed that the exercise is a part of the preparatory steps for the “Mega Mock Exercise” to be organized in February 2014.
