SHILLONG: The Comptroller and Auditor General’s report for 2011-12 has revealed that a special plan assistance of Rs 5 crore was released by the Union Government in March 2011 for the creation of new infrastructure in the sports sector of Meghalaya.

As per the report, an amount of Rs 2.21 crore was released for the construction of 51 basketball courts at various locations in the state while an amount of Rs 1 crore was released for construction of an outdoor stadium at Nagrasket, West Garo Hills.

An amount of Rs 50 lakh was also released for construction of a mini outdoor stadium at Rabukong, and an additional Rs 91 lakh was also released for construction of a sitting gallery and other works and playground at Munaibari.

Similarly, Rs 38 lakh was released for construction of two sepaktakraw courts at the JN Sports Complex in Shillong.

The audit of the CAG observed that as of March 2012, except of the sepak takraw courts, none of the other projects have been completed.

The audit also revealed that construction work in respect of the project of outdoor stadium at Nagrasket , construction of mini outdoor stadium at Rabukong and construction of the sitting gallery and other works and playground at Munaibari have not even commenced.

According to the report, as regards to construction of the 51 basketball courts, no expenditure has been booked in respect of construction of these facilities.

It was also noticed that no proper land has been identified for the execution of basketball courts at nine locations.

“The purpose for release of special plan assistance by Government of India remained unachieved,” the audit surmised.
