SHILLONG: After being sacked from service, absconding policeman Nurul Islam on Thursday received another jolt when Meghalaya High Court rejected the anticipatory bail plea
Islam is accused of raping two sisters in Ampati, the home constituency of Chief Minster Dr Mukul Sangma.
A High Court bench comprising Justice SR Sen rejected Islam’s anticipatory bail plea based on the decision of the Supreme Court that anticipatory bail cannot be granted to a person who has been declared as absconder under Section 82 of the CrPC.
Islam, who was in charge of the Ampati Police Station, went into a hiding on June 2 after escaping from a police quarter at Tura town in the West Garo Hills.
He allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl in the police station on March 13. On March 31, he raped the victim’s 17-year-old sister at gunpoint in their house.) The officer had threatened to kill both the girls if they informed anyone.
At least five policemen, including a deputy superintendent of police and a sub-inspector, were placed under suspension after Islam’s escape.
It may be mentioned that the Home Department had instituted a departmental proceeding against Islam and subsequently he was sacked from service.
The State police had also issued a look out notice against the absconding cop. And with High Court rejecting his anticipatory bail plea Islam has no other option but to surrender before police.
Islam is the second police officer in Meghalaya to be dismissed from service after sub-inspector SN Roy who was sacked for being allegedly involved in the gang-rape of a 13-year-old school girl at a city hotel here on March 17, 2011.
